Travel Run // Dolce Vita a Roma

5. Mai 2015

ROM – Die ewige Stadt, Hauptstadt Italiens und meine kurze Auszeit vom Alltag.
Vom Samstag 25.
Wuhuuuu!

ROME - The Eternal City, the capital of Italy and my short break from everyday life.
From Saturday 25 April to Tuesday, April 28 my friend and I stayed in Rome.
The whole trip was rather a spontaneous idea. Our big summer vacation is far away in June, but I wanted now escape the gray weather in Germany. And so I met with my journey looking at an unbeatable offer from Ryanair: Memmingen- Rome, round trip flight for € 33.95. Not thinking long and booked! Although I´ve been in Rome once, but that was long ago, it was a typical school trip in the hot summer months. On the other hand my friend had never been to Rome and he is enthusiastic about ancient history, he was also pleased at the little City trip.
For the period suitably I found at my favorite hotel book homepage booking.com a great range of hotels and was already our impromptu trip.
Wuhuuuu!

FLUG

FLIGHT
A cheaper flight has unfortunately also a few disadvantages. Two weeks prior to departure date, I got a message from Ryanair which is shifted to our flight whole six hours. So we ended up in Rome at half past eleven until around thirty. This is of course annoying as we have thus lost the first day almost.
Our return flight was time expresses "uncomfortable" in the morning at six, so we had to leave the hotel at four clock in the morning. For late risers and sleepy heads like me a real challenge :)
So at the end we only had two full days to explore the city.
Raynair flies from Memmingen to new slightly smaller Campino airport. The best and cheapest way into the city is traveling with one of the many airport buses which directly goes from Campino to Termini (main train station). From there you can reach either by metro, the bus, on foot or by taxi every hotel Rome.

HOTEL

HOTEL
An offer from booking.com we paid for two nights in “Star Vatican Rooms”only around 290 € plus a tourist tax of € 5 per Person and night.
The hotel opened in 2014 and is located near the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica in an old Roman neighborhood in Via Catone. More precisely, the hotel is actually an apartment but the owner has just made a great hotel with three guest rooms. Therefore, you really has as feeling that you live in Rome.
The rooms are great! Very large (especially the bathroom), the bed is heavenly, Soundproofed windows, minibar ..... see by yourself:

SIGHTSEEING

SIGHTSEEING
In Rome there is really a lot to discover. St. Peter's Basilica, Colosseum, Pantheon, etc.
In our previous city trips, we always like to have a hop-off, hop-on bus tour made to get from attraction to attraction, unfortunately, I have read in advance at various text portals that this is not recommended in Rome, as the buses are too late and depart irregular. Since there is nothing annoying in a holiday than to wait for a stupid tourist bus (the experience we had already with the Golden Bus in London) we have therefore opted for the old version, we go on food! On foot you can really reach all attractions, you only need good shoes as the cobbles can be uncomfortable over time.

Petersdom

St. Peter's Basilica
I think everyone who travels to Rome, want to see from the inside of the greatest of all churches It is really impressive. It is highly recommended to come early in the morning, because the queue is in the afternoon almost indefinitely ...
Also nice is a visit to the dome, which we have omitted, because we were already at Castel Sant'Angelo and there you nearly have the same view.
Also worth a visit, but you just need it a little more time: The Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel.

Colosseum

Colosseum
Again, it is advisable to be there early in the morning. Even if it's something small looks from the outside and also inside the Colosseum offered up to 75,000 spectators and is still a model of modern stadiums.

Foro Romano (Forum Romanum)

Foro Romano (Roman Forum)
by the mighty buildings of the former heart of the Roman Empire are only ruins left. With a little imagination you converts but to their original paths of Nero, Cesar and Hadrian. For me one of the most beautiful places in Rome. A little off the typical tourist-paths we discovered on the ruins of the Atrium Vestae a beautifully garden with scented roses and with orange trees addition to a great view of the Foro Romano.

Kapitolshügel
Capitol Hill

Piazza Navona
Meisterwerk des Barock zwischen Touristen, Straßenkünstler und Straßenhändler.

Piazza Navona
Baroque masterpiece between tourists, street performers and street vendors.

Pantheon
Pantheon
I do not know what of the Pantheon fascinates me the most, the age (nearly 3000 years old), the size (with an inner diameter of 43.3 meters, the dome is larger than that of St. Peter's Basilica) or the mysterious 9m large hole in the ceiling of the dome.

Engelsburg

Castel Sant'Angelo
The fortress convinces with a wonderful view over Rome.

Fontana di Trevi
Wurde leider gerade geputzt und renoviert....

Fontana di Trevi
Unfortunally it was cleaned and restored....

Piazza di Spagna
Die berühmte Spanische Treppe im Blumenmeer.

Piazza di Spagna
The famous Spanish Steps in the sea of flowers.

Set in a scenic backdrop of typical Roman houses there is a nice market with many fruit, flower and grocers.

SHOPPING
Worauf Sie mürrisch antwortete „What dress? What dress?“.

SHOPPING
I love the Italian flair and the historical atmosphere of Rome, The only thing that had really easily spoiled my last day in Rome was my desire to go shopping in Rome! If there is something you should do in Rome then it is clearly NOT SHOP! Exception: you can effort the luxury shops arount the Spanish stairs, I think then you might make a better experience than I did.
My first mistake was to believe that there are mainly small nice Italian boutiques with great Italian design in Rome. On the main shopping street namely follows Zara, mango, Kiko, to MAC and H & M - Sorry but I really have no flying so far, as I can just take the train to Stuttgart, as the shopping street is least dense with Cars drive on.
My second mistake was in the few small boutiques which we've found around the Vatican Museums really to believe that the Italians rejoice if a tourist wants to buy! I work in the fashion trade and therefore the sentence is "The customer is king" quasi a corporate mantra. Not so in Italy, in 90% of all the stores I entered I was not greeted warmly or get help. I was seen more as a hostile intruder of the afternoon resting time.
Get the Scoop: pretty close to the St. Peter's Cathedral there is a street with many small stores. In a shop window, I discover a really super nice summer dress and so I entered the store. But searched unsuccessful for the dress. So I said the saleswoman, who set behind the cash in a chair and not a welcome or help.  So I told her that I'm looking for the dress in the shop window. She grumpy replied "What dress? What dress? ". Now it must be mentioned that in the window there was just thi one dress - a dress! She get up of her chair, shuffled to the window and said "Sold out! Sould out! "and shuffled back to her chair behind the cash register. Now I ask myself, why you hang a dress in a shop window, which no longer exists and why the "nice" lady has not just offered to give me the final dress from the showcase. Sorry but so much laziness I had absolutely no desire here to spend a cent.
Of course, certainly many tourists visit the small shops and look but buy final nothing - but is this really an excuse for the cold ignorance of some Italian saleswomen? No! And so I bought a little frustrated at familiar stores like Kiko, Lush (really great and nice seller!) and Sephora.
A small exception: A shop named "MILK" has not only great clothes but also a nice (somewhat shy) seller.

ESSEN

FOOD
While in Rome, however, one cannot good shopping, but incredibly well gormandize!
From typical pizza to pasta to fish dishes - the Roman cuisine is varied and delicious.
On our first night I ate delicious spaghetti Cabonara, not the cheap cream sauces stuff a lá Barillia, special finely seasoned with olive oil, eggs and delicious Italian bacon. Although the restaurant "Venerina" faces in a more touristic, but the food was very delicious and the prices also were fine. The pizza from my friend was according to him the best that he had eaten during our stay in Rome.
For dessert there's a super-chocolaty biscotti :)
On the second night I tried something new, the restaurant "Trattoria Frascati“on the
Via di Porto Castello.
Fresh tuna fillet with sesame fried and warm honey-balsamic sauce - heavenly!
On our last night we discover a really great restaurant "Ai Balestrari in Prati" near our hotel. The Saltimbocca a lá Romana was delicious!
The best ice cream we ate was near the pantheon on Piazza della Maddalena "San Crispino" - Chocolate with Rum, a homemade dream ... but unfortunately had its price (2.70 € for a bullet!).
And don´t forget the Vino! ^^

WETTER

WEATHER
The months of April / May are the perfect months to visit in Rome, it is still not as warm as in summer, yet warmer than in Germany, so that one felt this has to be a holiday. In addition, one is still in the pre-season and therefore often gets cheap flight & hotel deals. On Tuesday evening, it has unfortunately started to rain and it cooled off a bit, but since it was our last evening it did not bother us ...

FAZIT
See u soon in Rome! :)

CONCLUSION
Actually, two days are really much too short in order to form a correct opinion about a city. But Rome has impressed me like being in a time machine into the past traveled in the middle of the thriving Roman Empire, where you better eat a lot than go shopping. See u soon in Rome! :)
